Beginning in 2007, the CINMS Advisory Council took action to address the potential impacts of ocean acidification.  Spearheaded by SAC members Bruce Steele and Linda Krop, the Conservation Working Group produced a comprehensive report,  Ocean Acidification and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Cause, effect, and response.  

The initiative inspired resolutions, motions and letters across the National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council system, and led to development of the West Coast Ocean Acidification Task Force for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.

Now available for Sanctuary Advisory Council review is a completed action plan, which was developed as a result of the recommendations from the five sanctuary advisory council resolutions on ocean acidification. The action plan was created by a regional Task Force including one staff member from each of the five west coast national marine sanctuaries across all of the major program areas, an advisory council representative, and staff from NOAA’s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research’s (OAR) Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) and National Ocean Service’s (NOS) National Center for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS).

A recent memo from the CINMS coordinator to SAC members advised that while the report is complete, it may be updated again depending on how discussions play out at meetings of west coast Advisory Councils.
